Most of the WMA is covered in swamp and is best traversed in a kayak, but a few levees of areas large enough to accommodate a smaller RV. You can also hike along the unimproved roads that crisscross the region.

More Information: Picayune Strand State ForestĪ little over an hour from Fort Myers between Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades, this campground is a great place to stay from November to April. After that, you’re just a short drive from some great coastal kayaking. Nearby Activities: Pack your hiking boots! There’s a 22-mile-long hike within the forest. There are picnic tables and fire rings though. Campsites have no hookups and no drinking water is available, so you’ll need to come prepared. During the wet season, much of it can be underwater. This state forest is just minutes from the city of Naples and Big Cypress National Preserve. More Information: Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area Nearby Activities: The WMA is part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail, and is considered one of the best places for birdwatching in the state. There are several lakes close by, including Lake Kissimmee, Jackson, and Marian that are great for fishing. Less than an hour south of Orlando, Three Lakes WMA is a small, rustic campground with just a few sites for hunters and birdwatchers. Nearby Activities: This is a popular place to camp during the hunting season and for those wanting to kayak on the Ochlockonee River. It’s very quiet and has excellent river access. A boat ramp is available at the campsite.Īlso near the Ochlockonee River, sites have no hookups but there is a vault toilet and the campground doesn’t get as many visitors as some of the other boondocking locations in the area. Most people think of Florida as a beachy paradise, but your best dry camping options are found further inland, where lush forests and glistening lakes dominate. So don’t be discouraged, there are still quite a few places to set up camp and many of them are close to the Sunshine State’s best attractions.
